A couple of days ago I watched the documentary Bigger, Faster, Stronger, which is about the use of steroids in America. It is a great documentary and it makes you question a lot of things and you can really see how fake and misleading a lot of people are (not to mention not having a clue about what they are talking about), from politicians, doctors, athletes, etc.

I won’t give you my whole thought process on the subject but what I will do is share my thought on the supplement industry. If you watch the movie you will see how much of the supplement world is nothing but a scam. Many of the fitness magazines that market supplements more than they provide content, have before and after pictures that are complete scams and really can’t be regulated. Here is a snap from the movie where some truth is revealed.

Hydroxycut huh?

You have to be smart and use common sense and not fall for all the marketing and hype and get information from good sources. The truth is there are supplements that should be staples in our nutrition and there are supplemnts that will help us get to our goals faster. Remember that nothing is more important than having good nutritional habits. If you eat like crap but take a bunch of supplements then you are doing absolutely nothing for yourself! Get your nutrition straight first………

Here are the supplemets that I think should be a staple with anyone trying to improve performance, gain muscle, lose weight or just improve their health (so basically everyone!):

- A good multivitamin

- Fish Oil - Omega 3’s

- Whey Protein

And some other’s that have great benefit and have years of positive research to back it up:

- Creatine

- BCAA’s (Branched Chain Amino Acids)

And I’m also intrigued by some of the research coming out on Beta-Alanine, but only time will tell whether it is here to stay.

With all of the marketing out there, I can count proven and very useful supplemets on my hand. With that said, you have to pay even more attention to getting your eating habits in check. I have wrote about this before but there are so many athletes just eating plain crap and buying hundred’s of dollars worth of supplements, hoping to get amazing results.

I am a big fan of John Berardi’s Precision Nutrition System and I use it with all of my athletes as it very applicable and it covers everything from A-Z of applying proper nutrition into your lifestyle. If you are serious about improving your performance, health and body composition, then you need to stop looking for short cuts and change your lifestyle.

Let me know what you think about supplements and steroid use and post it the comment section.
